Over the past few weeks, I’ve been thinking a lot about the people I’ve lost. I’m not sure if there was a significant trigger that caused this or if it’s just where my mind and heart have led me, but it’s been a tough few weeks.

Many of you have lost more than I have. There are losses that I cannot fathom that you’ve experienced. Perhaps the loss of a child, the loss of a spouse, the loss of yourself. No, I’ve been fortunate but not unscathed.

In the past five years, I’ve lost my father, my best friend, and one of my most beloved mentors. All three men had a profound impact on my life in so many ways. It was in times of doubt, need, pain, or rage that I reached out to these anchors in my life, and they were always there. They delivered. They were my foundation when I struggled; they never failed to help and mold me into a better man.

Then they were gone.

Perhaps at my stage of life, with all of the changes (career, kids growing up, loss), I’m facing some stark realities. Those realities raise doubts and fears.

At any age, your father is a confidant. He’s walked the road before I did. Turning to him was always an option and yielded good results. I can’t do that anymore. Does a man ever really get over losing the one person in the world who truly wants you to do better than he did in this life? I think not.

I particularly miss my friend Brian. Brian was more of a brother than a friend. The kind of brother you might not speak to for six months, then pick up the phone and it's like you've been talking every day. He always brought me levity in any situation. When I was miserable, he’d make me cry — laughing. The level of encouragement was always off the charts. Even if he were struggling in his own life, he’d prioritize me and spend the time and energy to help me right my ship. I miss that. I miss him. I am haunted by the fact that I missed the last time he called me before he died way too soon, and what I would do to go back and be able to answer that call. Always make the time to talk to those you love, even if you think you don’t have the time.

My mentor Jim Bolla always used to tell me: “Don’t worry, man, you’re talented and you do things for the right reason. It’ll work out.” He was that older male figure in my life who always had a sage piece of advice that could only come from experience, success, failure, and his own life's pain. As a young man, he taught me the value of hard work, the importance of relationships, and the importance of always following your moral compass. Yes, we all fall short of that at times, but in times when I struggled with relationships or career, Coach Bolla was there to coach me. Sure, I didn’t play basketball, but he saw the correlation between the game he loved, played, and coached, and success in life so accurately. I miss his advice and direction when I face tough decisions.

But why have these three losses been top of mind so much over the past few weeks? Why has the pain of the loss and the yearning to feel their presence in my life been so profound? I think C.S. Lewis said it best, again, in The Problem of Pain, when he said: “God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks to us in our conscience, but shouts to us in our pain: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”

God is shouting at me. I hear him, but I can’t quite make out what he is saying. I’m doing my best to listen and decipher. Perhaps missing these three important people I’ve lost is part of the message he’s trying to send. Possibly seeing what’s happening in the world, the past few weeks, like the Charlie Kirk assassination, is also speaking to me. I’m trying to figure it out, and Dad, Brian, and Jim used to help me decipher. Now, I’m on my own. Perhaps God is telling me something with that, too.

Then I return to Lewis and the work I quote here throughout, The Problem of Pain. In one of the most profound quotes from the book, Lewis says: “We are, not metaphorically but in very truth, a Divine work of art, something that God is making, and therefore something with which He will not be satisfied until it has a certain character.”

Clearly, God has more work to do as do I. I miss my family and friends, yet I know they live within me and that I am called each day to keep working on myself. This yearning for their presence and the pain of their loss isn’t a negative. It’s a tool for them to continue helping me.

Pain is a warning. It helps us see things we might not see otherwise. Trying to escape suffering isn’t what we should desire, despite how much it hurts. Instead, the suffering we feel in loss should prompt us to delve deeper into our own lives and what we can learn from it. It has value, and that value only brings us closer to being the complete person God intended us to be.

The human component in PR work is not just a formality, but a crucial factor that maintains our brand voice authenticity, emotional resonance, and cultural sensitivity, despite the efficiency brought by AI. Nevertheless, my journey through 2023 has presented its fair share of challenges, dampening the usual holiday merriment.

During this year, my family encountered a daunting trial that tested our resilience and inner strength. A significant health issue affected one of my children. As any parent would fear, witnessing your child suffer while feeling powerless to solve it is an unimaginable nightmare. Amidst countless sleepless nights and ceaseless worries, I realized that true meaning lies not in perfect circumstances but in the love that binds us together even during the darkest times.

This year brought about substantial changes and necessitated adaptability on a professional front. Transitioning careers is never easy, especially when faced with additional personal challenges; it can feel like we are steering a ship amidst stormy seas. However, it is within these tempestuous waters that we uncover our genuine capabilities and strengths.

The analogy of pruning a plant to facilitate growth deeply resonates with me. This year has felt like a season of pruning – removing what is unnecessary, superficial or temporary.

Changing careers, even though it can be intimidating, has opened up new possibilities and unexpected opportunities. It has reinforced my belief that sometimes you have to close one chapter in order to begin a more fulfilling one.

Despite facing challenges, my faith has remained strong and unwavering. It has been a guiding light for me during the difficult moments of this year. Faith is about believing in things we can't see and holding onto hope when things seem hopeless. In 2023, my faith has been like an anchor during the storm, reminding me that there's always light at the end of the tunnel and that every trial brings an opportunity for personal growth. Sure, I’ve had my moments of doubt. We all do. Some days, I wonder how I will make it to the next one. But it always comes back to faith.

Another difficult lesson during tough times is you come to realize that many relationships are temporary. This year has taught me to distinguish between those who are in my life for a short period and those who are there for a reason. It can be hard to accept that not everyone who walks alongside you is truly on your journey. Yet, there is a deep sense of peace when you understand and embrace this truth. I've learned to cherish genuine connections—the people who support me through thick and thin, offer a shoulder to lean on, and love me unconditionally. These are the relationships that hold immeasurable value.

2023 has also been a year of self reflection, understanding how others perceive you and the significance you hold in their lives. It has been enlightening to witness how certain relationships are dependent on what you can provide. When you succeed, they thrive, but when you face hardships, they fade away. Though this realization may be painful, it is an essential part of personal development. It teaches us to value those who appreciate us for who we are as individuals, rather than simply what we can offer.

I don’t often to get the chance to write fiction anymore…but here’s a quick attempt at getting back to it. A short story about a father and his notebook.

The old man sat on the bench, watching the children play. They were laughing and running around, oblivious to the world around them. The old man smiled wistfully, remembering when he was young and carefree.

He had been a good father, he thought. He had always been there for his children, providing and loving them unconditionally. But there were times when he had been too busy with work or tired from a long day, and he hadn't been as present as he could have been.

As he watched the children play, he felt a wave of regret. He regretted the times he had missed and had been too focused on himself and not enough on his family. 

He regretted the times he had been angry or impatient when he said or did things he didn't mean.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a notebook. It was a small, leather-bound notebook he had kept since his children were born. In it, he had written down all of his thoughts and feelings about fatherhood. There were memories of happy times, milestones reached, and challenges overcome. There were also regrets, things he wished he had done differently.

He opened the notebook and began to read. As he read, he smiled and laughed, but he also cried. He cried for the times he had missed but also for the times he had gotten right. He cried for his love for his children and his regret for the things he could never change.

When he was finished reading, he closed the notebook and put it back in his pocket. He stood up and walked away from the playground, feeling a sense of peace. He knew he had been a good father; that was all that mattered.

He walked home, thinking about his children. He smiled, remembering all the good times they had shared. He knew he would never forget them; they would always be in his heart.

As he walked, he thought about the notebook. He knew he would never read it again, but he was glad he had kept it. It reminded him of his journey as a father and all the love he had for his children.

The old man died that night peacefully in his sleep. His children were at his side, and they knew that he loved them very much.

Although this boss was able to excel in managing up due to their experience and overall intelligence, almost every man and woman who worked for them walked on eggshells. If this executive was having a bad day, everyone knew about it and tried to stay out of the firing line. The lack of self-awareness was glaring and resulted in many of us deciding to move on despite our liking for one another. The leader was punitive and unyielding in making sure everyone felt their pain.

In addition to self-awareness, leaders must also be able to understand and manage the emotions of others. This involves empathy, or the ability to put oneself in someone else's shoes and understand their feelings and perspectives. Empathy is critical for leaders who want to build strong relationships, resolve conflicts, and motivate others.

A friend once lost an aunt to a sudden heart attack and immediately went to her supervisor to tell her and ask for a few days off. Instead of caring for and appreciating her condition due to her loss, the supervisor told her she could take the time if, and only if, she finished a project she was working on before she left. It was cold, and their relationship never recovered.

But this empathy and putting others before yourself can take other forms too.

An empathetic leader may be able to understand why an employee is feeling frustrated or overwhelmed and take steps to support and motivate them. On the other hand, a leader who lacks empathy may fail to understand the perspectives of others and come across as insensitive or unapproachable.
